A series of looped films made at Birmingham Nature Centre.
The images focus on the constructed habitats for primates and reptiles whose elusive appearances re-enforce their staged environment and occasionally fulfill our anthropomorphic curiosity. Reflections, shadows, and shifts in light disrupt the formal framing of the images and enhance the ambiguous fictional reality of the spaces, in which humans are equally implied as occupants and performers.
First as part of Sounding the River, a four night promenading event in Cannon Hill Park adjacent to Birmingham Nature Centre. The screens were suspended in a woodland clearing.
The work was commissioned by Midlands Arts Centre and curated by artist Jony Easterby. With artists Mark Anderson, Red Earth, Kathy Hinde, Ulf Pederson.
